Do college students really need a standing desk?  Yes, that is if a.) they use a laptop and b.) they want to improve their mental and physical health. We all know by now the dangerous toll prolonged sitting takes on our physical health, but recent studies are also touting the benefits that standing while working can have on our cognitive capabilities.

Good, lifelong habits form early.  If you're a college student, we'd like to share with you the three reasons college students should be using a standing desk.

#1. You'll Improve Mental Performance.

Let's face it. College can be tough. With so many different subjects to cover each semester, mental alertness is essential to success. New research is beginning to unveil the benefits of standing desk usage in mental performance. One such study conducted by Texas A&M Health Science Center showed an improvement in cognitive functioning.

Ranjana Mehta, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Texas A&M School of Public Health, researched freshman high school students with who used standing desks and found “Test results indicated that continued use of standing desks was associated with significant improvements in executive function and working memory capabilities.”

Improved memory and executive function?  Yes, please!!

#2. You'll Improve Health and Fitness:

There's no question sitting is detrimental to our health and the fact is college students sit a lot. With all the sitting in class and while studying, it's hard to work in physical activity. No wonder the “Freshman 15” is a thing.

To offset this sedentary behavior, you could run ten marathons, or you could stand while studying for (3) hours a day for (5) days a week. In a recent research cited by the BBC, standing while working burns an average of 50 more calories an hour than standing. That doesn't sound like much, but that adds up to about 30,000 extra calories a school year, or around 8lbs of fat.

Stated in terms of activity levels, that's the equivalent of running almost ten marathons a year!

#3. You'll be in Good Company.

Standing while working isn't a new thing. Ernest Hemmingway, Charles Dickens, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin all used standing desks.
